Google Chrome features a built-in media hub known as “Global Media Controls.” Whenever you play audio or video in any tab—whether it’s a YouTube video, a Spotify web player, or a loud advertisement—a small music note icon appears in the top-right corner of your browser toolbar, next to your extensions. Clicking it opens a drop-down menu that allows you to pause, play, or skip the media without switching tabs.
While convenient for some, this icon can be incredibly distracting for power users who prefer a minimalist browser interface. Furthermore, because it aggregates media from every single open tab, the drop-down menu can become a chaotic, massive list if you have dozens of tabs open. If you prefer to manage your media directly within the tabs themselves, you can completely remove the music note icon from your toolbar.
How to Turn Off the Global Media Controls in Chrome
You must access Chrome’s hidden “Experiments” menu to disable the toolbar integration.
- Open the Google Chrome browser.
- Click inside the address bar at the top of the screen.
- Type the following exact command and press Enter:
chrome://flags/#global-media-controls - The browser will load the Experiments page, automatically scrolling down to highlight the Global Media Controls setting in yellow.
- Click the drop-down menu on the right side of the highlighted setting (which currently says “Default”).
- Select Disabled from the drop-down list.
- A large blue Relaunch button will appear at the bottom right of the window. Click it to restart Chrome.
Once Chrome restarts, the music note icon will be permanently purged from your toolbar. You can play as many videos or audio streams as you want across multiple tabs, and your browser interface will remain completely clean and static.
