How to Block Payment Handlers Globally in Google Chrome

The Automated Checkout

Google Chrome features a controversial API known as “Payment Handlers.” This API allows websites to bypass traditional credit card forms and instead directly invoke third-party payment applications or Google Pay wallets integrated directly into the browser. While this makes checking out on e-commerce sites faster, it also creates a massive security surface area. If you prefer to manually, intentionally type your credit card details into a secure payment gateway and refuse to allow web scripts to automatically trigger payment interfaces, you must force Chrome to lock down this API.

How to Block Payment Handlers Globally

You can permanently lock the browser out of the automated checkout API via the Site Settings.

  1. Open the Google Chrome desktop browser.
  2. Click the three vertical dots (⋮) in the top right corner and select Settings.
  3. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy and security.
  4. In the main window, click on Site settings.
  5. Scroll down to the bottom and click to expand Additional permissions.
  6. Click on Payment handlers.
  7. Under the “Default behavior” heading, select the radio button for “Don’t allow sites to install payment handlers.”

Manual Security

The change takes effect instantly. Google Chrome will completely sever its internal connection to the Payment Request API stack. The browser will instantly auto-reject every single background request from any e-commerce website attempting to launch an automated wallet or third-party checkout app. You will be forced to use standard, traditional checkout forms, guaranteeing you maintain complete manual control over every financial transaction you authorize.
