The Shift Key Trap
Windows 11 includes a legacy accessibility feature known as “Filter Keys.” This feature is designed to help users with hand tremors by instructing the keyboard to ignore brief, repeated keystrokes. To make this easy to activate, Windows listens for a specific hardware shortcut: pressing and holding down the Right Shift key for exactly 8 seconds. Unfortunately, if you are playing a PC game that requires you to hold Shift to sprint or crouch for an extended period, Windows will violently minimize your game and trigger an intrusive pop-up asking if you want to enable Filter Keys. You must disable this shortcut for uninterrupted gaming.
How to Turn Off the Filter Keys Shortcut
You can permanently sever the 8-second Shift trigger via the Accessibility settings.
- Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on Accessibility.
- In the main window, scroll down to the “Interaction” section and click on Keyboard.
- Locate the Filter keys section, but do not flip the master switch. Click the small arrow icon (>) on the far right to expand the advanced menu.
- Look for the specific checkbox labeled “Keyboard shortcut for Filter keys” (Press and hold the Right Shift key for 8 seconds to turn Filter keys on and off).
- Toggle this specific switch to the Off position.
Seamless Sprinting
The change takes effect instantly. Windows 11 will completely stop monitoring the duration of your Shift key presses. You can return to your game and hold down the Shift key for an hour without the operating system ever again attempting to minimize your application or interrupt your gameplay with a settings prompt.
