The Distraction Board
By default, Windows 11 dedicates the far-left corner of your Taskbar to a small weather icon. If you accidentally hover your mouse over this icon, a massive panel violently slides out from the side of your screen. This is the “Widgets” board (formerly known as News and Interests). It is packed with clickbait news articles, celebrity gossip, stock market tickers, and traffic updates. For a professional attempting to maintain a clean, focused, distraction-free desktop environment, this massive, accidentally triggered news feed is a highly destructive feature. You must completely unpin the Widgets board from your Taskbar.
How to Turn Off the Widgets Button
You can permanently strip the Widgets icon from your desktop via the Taskbar settings.
- Right-click anywhere on an empty space on your Taskbar and select Taskbar settings.
- In the Settings window that opens, look at the very top section labeled Taskbar items.
- Locate the toggle switch labeled Widgets.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position.
A Clean Desktop
The change is instantaneous. Windows 11 will completely terminate the background connection to the MSN news server. The weather icon will instantly vanish from the far-left corner of your screen. You can now throw your mouse into the bottom-left corner of your monitor without fear; the massive news panel will never again accidentally slide out to cover your active applications, guaranteeing a perfectly sterile, professional desktop experience.
