How to Block Location Tracking Globally in Google Chrome

The Geographic Exploit

Google Chrome supports the Geolocation API, which allows web applications to triangulate your exact physical location by querying your IP address, local Wi-Fi networks, and OS location services. By default, websites must prompt you for permission via a pop-up before accessing this data. However, the constant barrage of pop-ups is annoying, and accidental clicks can easily surrender your physical coordinates to a malicious actor or an aggressive advertising network. For absolute desktop privacy, you must completely paralyze the browser’s ability to process location requests.

How to Block Location Tracking Globally

You can permanently sever the browser’s internal location-routing engine via Chrome’s Site Settings.

  1. Open the Google Chrome desktop browser.
  2. Click the three vertical dots (⋮) in the top right corner and select Settings.
  3. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy and security.
  4. In the main window, click on Site settings.
  5. Under the “Permissions” heading, click on Location.
  6. Under the “Default behavior” heading, select the radio button for “Don’t allow sites to see your location.”

Absolute Spatial Anonymity

The change takes effect instantly. Google Chrome will completely sever its internal connection to your operating system’s geographic triangulation stack. The browser is now permanently blind to where it is located on Earth. If a website (such as a mapping service or a retail store locator) attempts to execute a Geolocation API script to find your coordinates, the request will instantly auto-reject in the background, returning a null value. You will never see a location pop-up again, guaranteeing absolute spatial anonymity for your desktop workstation.
