The Digital Fingerprint
Windows 11 generates a unique, device-specific “Advertising ID” the moment you create your user account. This ID is essentially a digital fingerprint that Microsoft shares with third-party application developers and advertising networks. As you use your computer, open apps, and browse the web, this ID is used to build a comprehensive profile of your interests, which is then used to bombard you with highly targeted, personalized advertisements across different Windows applications. If you value your privacy and refuse to be tracked by a digital barcode while using a computer you paid for, you must destroy the Advertising ID.
How to Turn Off the Advertising ID
You can permanently revoke developer access to your tracking profile via the Privacy settings.
- Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy & security.
- In the main window, scroll down to the “Windows permissions” section.
- Click on General.
- Locate the master toggle switch labeled “Let apps show me personalized ads by using my advertising ID.”
- Toggle this switch to the Off position.
A Generic Experience
The change takes effect instantly. Windows 11 will completely sever third-party access to the tracking registry and effectively reset your ID. While you may still occasionally see advertisements inside free Windows Store applications, they will be entirely generic and untargeted, completely disconnected from your personal usage habits and browsing history.
