The Google Nest Hub is designed to manage its own software seamlessly in the background. Most of the time, firmware updates are downloaded and installed automatically in the middle of the night when the device is not in use. However, if you are experiencing bugs, missing a newly released feature, or have just set up a device that has been unplugged for months, you may not want to wait for the automatic schedule.
Understanding the Preview Program
Before attempting to force an update, it is important to understand that Google rolls out firmware in waves. Not all devices receive the update on the same day. If you want to be at the front of the queue for all future updates, you should join the Preview Program.
- Open the Google Home app on your smartphone or tablet.
- Tap on your Nest Hub device from the main screen.
- Tap the Settings icon (the gear in the top right).
- Select Device Information.
- Tap on Preview Program and select Join Program.
How to Force an Update via Reboot
While Google does not provide a simple “Check for Updates” button for the Nest Hub, the device always checks for the latest firmware immediately upon booting up. You can force this check by performing a soft reboot.
- Open the Google Home app and select your Nest Hub.
- Tap the Settings gear icon.
- Tap the three vertical dots in the top-right corner.
- Select Reboot from the drop-down menu.
Alternatively, you can perform a hard reboot by simply unplugging the power cable from the back of the Nest Hub, waiting for 10 seconds, and plugging it back in.
Monitoring the Update Process
When the device powers back on, it will connect to your Wi-Fi and ping Google’s servers. If a new firmware version is available for your device, it will begin downloading immediately. You will see a grey screen with a progress bar and the text “Updating your device.” Do not unplug the Nest Hub during this process, as interrupting a firmware flash can corrupt the system.
