The PDF Interception Vector
By default, Google Chrome intercepts all PDF links you click, actively preventing the file from downloading to your hard drive. Instead, it forces the document to open within its own proprietary, built-in PDF viewer tab. While convenient for quick reading, Chrome’s internal viewer lacks advanced editing tools, annotation features, and digital signature capabilities. If you rely on dedicated software like Adobe Acrobat or Foxit Reader for professional work, this automatic interception forces you into a frustrating, multi-step process just to save the file.
How to Disable the Built-In PDF Viewer
You can instruct Chrome to completely bypass its internal viewer and force all PDFs to download immediately, just like any standard file.
1. Open Google Chrome.
2. Click the three vertical dots in the extreme top-right corner to open the main menu.
3. Select Settings.
4. In the left-hand navigation pane, click on Privacy and security.
5. Click on Site settings.
6. Scroll down to the very bottom and click on Additional content settings to expand the list.
7. Click on PDF documents.
8. Change the default behaviour by selecting the radio button next to Download PDFs.
Chrome will immediately stop intercepting documents. Clicking a PDF link will now trigger a standard download, allowing you to open the file directly in your preferred desktop application.
