How to Block Clipboard Access Globally in Google Chrome

The Data Extraction Vector

Modern web browsers feature an advanced API that allows websites to interface directly with your computer’s system clipboard. While this is occasionally useful for browser-based photo editors that allow you to “paste” an image, it is a massive security vulnerability. If you copy a sensitive password, a cryptocurrency wallet address, or a confidential email to your clipboard, a malicious website can potentially use this API to silently read that data the moment you click on the page. To ensure your copied text remains strictly isolated from the internet, you must force Google Chrome to completely block all clipboard access.

How to Block Clipboard Access Globally

You can permanently lock the browser out of your operating system’s clipboard memory via the Site Settings.

  1. Open the Google Chrome desktop browser.
  2. Click the three vertical dots (â‹®) in the top right corner and select Settings.
  3. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Privacy and security.
  4. In the main window, click on Site settings.
  5. Scroll down to the bottom and click to expand Additional permissions.
  6. Click on Clipboard.
  7. Under the “Default behavior” heading, select the radio button for “Don’t allow sites to see text or images on your clipboard.”

Memory Isolation

The change takes effect instantly. Google Chrome will completely sever its internal connection to the Windows or macOS clipboard manager. The browser will instantly auto-reject every single background request from any website attempting to read or overwrite your copied data. You will never see a permission pop-up, and you can browse the web knowing your system memory is physically isolated from malicious scripts.
