The Notification Clutter
Windows 11 constantly attempts to draw your attention to unread messages. By default, applications like Mail, Teams, Discord, or Slack are allowed to project small, bright red numbered circles directly onto their Taskbar icons. These “Taskbar Badges” indicate exactly how many unread emails or notifications you have waiting. For users who suffer from notification anxiety or professionals who demand a completely sterile, distraction-free desktop environment so they can focus entirely on the task at hand, these constantly updating red dots are a massive visual annoyance. You must completely strip the badges from the Taskbar.
How to Turn Off Taskbar Badges
You can permanently prevent applications from altering their taskbar icons via the Personalization settings.
- Right-click anywhere on an empty space on your Taskbar and select Taskbar settings.
- In the Settings window that opens, scroll down to the bottom and click on Taskbar behaviors to expand the hidden menu.
- Locate the specific checkbox labeled “Show badges on taskbar apps.”
- Uncheck the box.
A Sterile Taskbar
The change takes effect instantly. Windows 11 will completely sever the API connection that allows background applications to overlay text or numbers onto their primary icons. Every single red dot, unread message counter, and alert badge will instantly vanish from your screen. Your Taskbar will return to a perfectly clean, static row of icons, allowing you to ignore your inbox until you are specifically ready to open the application.
