How to Delete Extensions in Google Chrome

Browser extensions are tiny pieces of software that add new features to Google Chrome. While extensions like ad-blockers and password managers are incredibly useful, installing too many of them can severely degrade your computer’s performance. Every active extension consumes RAM (memory) and processing power, slowly grinding your browser to a halt.

Furthermore, outdated or abandoned extensions are a massive security risk, as malicious hackers frequently buy old extensions and inject them with spyware. If you have extensions installed that you no longer use, you should completely delete them from your browser.

Method 1: The Quick Delete (From the Toolbar)

If the extension you want to delete is currently pinned to your Chrome toolbar (the area right next to the address bar), you can remove it in two seconds.

  1. Open Google Chrome.
  2. Look at the top right corner of the window, just to the right of the URL address bar.
  3. Find the specific icon of the extension you want to delete (e.g., the red shield of an ad-blocker or the green ‘G’ of Grammarly).
  4. Right-click on the icon.
  5. A drop-down menu will appear. Click on Remove from Chrome…
  6. A small confirmation box will pop up asking if you are sure. Click the blue Remove button.

The icon will instantly vanish, and the software is completely deleted from your computer.

Method 2: Delete from the Extensions Menu

Many extensions run silently in the background and do not have an icon pinned to your main toolbar. To find and delete these hidden programs, you must dive into Chrome’s dedicated Extensions menu.

  1. Look at the top right corner of Chrome and click the Puzzle Piece icon (this is the master Extensions button).
  2. A drop-down list will appear showing all your active extensions. At the very bottom of this list, click on Manage extensions.

(Alternatively, you can simply type chrome://extensions/ directly into the URL address bar and hit Enter).

You are now on the master Extensions page. You will see a grid of large, rectangular cards, with one card for every single piece of software installed in your browser.

  1. Scroll through the grid and find the extension you want to get rid of.
  2. Look at the bottom right corner of that specific card. You will see two buttons: “Details” and “Remove.”
  3. Click the Remove button.
  4. A small pop-up box will appear in the top right corner asking for final confirmation. Click the blue Remove button again.

Disabling vs. Deleting

If you have an extension that you only use occasionally (like a screen recording tool or a coupon finder), you do not have to completely delete it. Instead, you can simply turn it off.

On the Manage extensions page (chrome://extensions/), look for the small blue toggle switch in the bottom right corner of the extension’s card. If you click the switch, it will turn grey, and the extension will be instantly disabled. It will stop consuming your computer’s memory and completely turn off, but it will remain installed so you can quickly toggle it back on when you actually need it.
