How to Stop Your Android Phone from Automatically Waking the Screen When You Pick It Up (Lift to Wake)

Modern Android smartphones use a combination of the gyroscope and accelerometer to sense physical movement. By default, most manufacturers enable a feature commonly called “Lift to Wake.” If your phone is resting face-up on a desk and you simply pick it up and tilt it toward your face, the screen will automatically turn on, allowing you to instantly see your notifications or use Face Unlock without ever pressing the power button.

While this feels incredibly futuristic, it is a massive drain on your battery if you are an active person. If your phone is in your hand while you are walking, gesturing, or carrying groceries, the screen will constantly and pointlessly flash on and off in your palm. Furthermore, if you are simply picking up the phone to move it out of the way, having the lock screen aggressively blast you with light is an annoyance.

You can dive into the gesture settings to disable this hardware trigger, forcing the screen to remain completely dark until you explicitly tap the glass or press the physical power button.

How to Disable “Lift to Wake” on Android

The exact name of the setting varies by manufacturer, but it is typically found in the display or gesture menus.

On Google Pixel / Standard Android

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap on Display.
  3. Tap on Lock screen.
  4. Scroll down and look for the toggle labeled Lift to check phone.
  5. Turn the toggle to the Off position.

On Samsung Galaxy Devices

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Advanced features.
  3. Tap on Motions and gestures.
  4. Locate the toggle switch labeled Lift to wake.
  5. Turn the toggle to the Off position.

Your phone’s screen will no longer react to physical movement. It will remain perfectly dark and completely locked no matter how much you tilt, shake, or carry the device.
