Whether you need to contact Google customer support for troubleshooting, register your device for an extended warranty, or verify compatibility with a specific HVAC system, you will need the unique serial number of your Google Nest Thermostat. Because the thermostat is mounted flush against a wall, finding this information can seem difficult. Fortunately, Google provides multiple ways to locate the serial number without needing to dismantle your heating setup.
Method 1: Finding the Serial Number via the Thermostat Display
The easiest and most practical way to find the serial number is directly through the Nest Thermostat’s built-in software interface, provided the device is powered on and functioning.
- Approach your Nest Thermostat and press the device (or tap the touch bar, depending on the model) to wake up the screen and open the main menu.
- Turn the outer ring (or swipe) to navigate to the Settings icon, which looks like a small gear. Press to select it.
- Scroll through the settings menu until you find the option labelled Technical Info. Select it.
- In the Technical Info menu, choose Display.
- Look for the line of text labelled Serial or Serial Number. This string of letters and numbers is the unique identifier for your device.
Method 2: Finding the Serial Number via the Google Home App
If you are not at home, or if the thermostat screen is unresponsive but still connected to your Wi-Fi network, you can retrieve the serial number using your smartphone.
- Open the Google Home app (or the Nest app, if you are using an older generation model that has not been migrated) on your iOS or Android device.
- Ensure you are logged into the Google account associated with your smart home setup.
- Locate and tap on your Nest Thermostat from the list of devices on the main dashboard.
- Tap the Settings gear icon, usually located in the top-right corner of the thermostat control screen.
- Scroll down and tap on Device Information.
- You will find the Serial Number listed on this screen, along with the device’s MAC address and current software version.
Method 3: Locating the Serial Number on the Physical Hardware
If the thermostat is completely dead, will not turn on, or has not yet been installed on the wall, you must locate the serial number printed physically on the device itself.
Unlike the MAC address or wiring diagram which are often printed on the wall-mounted base plate, the serial number for the Nest Thermostat is printed on the back of the display unit itself.
- Gently grasp the outer ring of the Nest Thermostat display and pull it straight away from the wall. The display unit should detach smoothly from the base plate.
- Turn the display unit over so you are looking at the back (the side with the pin connectors).
- Look closely for a small sticker or printed text near the bottom curve or the centre hub. The serial number will be printed there in very small text. You may need a magnifying glass or a bright light to read it clearly.
If you still have the original retail packaging, you can also find the serial number printed on a barcode sticker affixed to the outside of the box.
