How to Delete Multiple Contacts at Once on an iPhone

For years, deleting contacts on an iPhone was a tedious, frustrating process. You had to open each contact individually, tap Edit, scroll to the very bottom of the page, and tap Delete—one by one. Thankfully, Apple introduced a hidden gesture in iOS 16 that allows you to select and delete multiple contacts simultaneously, making contact management incredibly fast.

How to Mass Delete Contacts on iPhone

This method requires a specific two-finger gesture that is not immediately obvious, as there are no visible checkboxes on the screen until you perform the gesture.

1. Open the Phone app and tap the Contacts tab at the bottom, or open the standalone Contacts app on your iPhone.
2. Find the group of contacts you want to delete.
3. Place two fingers simultaneously on a contact in the list, and gently swipe down or up.
4. As you drag your two fingers across the list, the contacts will be highlighted in gray, indicating they have been selected.
5. Lift your fingers once you have highlighted all the contacts you wish to remove.
6. Long-press (tap and hold) on any of the highlighted contacts with a single finger.
7. A pop-up menu will appear. Tap Delete [X] Contacts (the X will show the total number you selected).
8. Confirm your choice by tapping Delete Contacts in the red warning prompt.

This action is permanent and cannot be undone. If you accidentally delete the wrong people, your only option for recovery is to restore your entire iPhone from a previous iCloud backup.

How to Delete Contacts Not Grouped Together

The two-finger swipe method is perfect if the contacts are listed consecutively. However, if you want to delete multiple people whose names start with different letters (e.g., Alice, John, and Zebra), you cannot use the swipe gesture without selecting everyone in between.

For non-consecutive deletions, you will need to log into iCloud.com on a Mac or PC. Open the web version of the Contacts app, hold down the Command key (Mac) or Ctrl key (Windows), and click on each contact you want to delete. Once selected, press the Delete or Backspace key on your keyboard.
