If you use Safari on your Mac for heavy research, your Bookmarks menu likely resembles a chaotic dumping ground. By default, every time you press Cmd + D to save a webpage, Safari simply drops the new bookmark at the absolute bottom of the list. After a few months, finding a specific bookmark requires endless scrolling through an unorganized mess.
Many Mac users waste hours manually clicking and dragging individual bookmarks up and down trying to create alphabetical order. However, macOS has a deeply hidden, native sorting mechanism built directly into Safari’s bookmark manager that can organize thousands of links alphabetically in less than three seconds.
Step 1: Open the Bookmark Editor
You cannot sort your bookmarks from the quick dropdown menu at the top of the screen. You must open the dedicated management interface.
- Open the Safari browser on your Mac.
- Look at the main menu bar at the very top of your screen and click on Bookmarks.
- Click on Edit Bookmarks (or simply press the keyboard shortcut Option + Cmd + B).
Step 2: Locate the Target Folder
Safari will open a new, full-screen tab displaying your entire bookmark hierarchy. You will see sections for “Favorites” (the icons on your start page) and your standard “Bookmarks” folders.
- Look at the left-hand sidebar to view your folder structure.
- Find the specific folder you want to organize. If you want to sort everything, you might have hundreds of loose links sitting directly in the main “Bookmarks” directory.
Step 3: Execute the Sort Command
This is where Apple hid the feature. There is no visible “Sort” button anywhere on the screen.
- Move your mouse cursor over the specific folder you want to organize in the sidebar.
- Right-Click (or Control-Click) directly on the folder name.
- A hidden context menu will appear. Look at the very bottom of the menu and click Sort By > Name.
The Result
The change is absolutely instantaneous. Safari will mathematically analyze every single bookmark within that folder and instantly snap them into perfect A-Z alphabetical order. If you have nested folders within that directory, the folders will be grouped alphabetically at the top, followed by the individual webpage links alphabetically below them.
If you use iCloud to sync your devices, this perfectly organized, alphabetical structure will automatically push to your iPhone and iPad within seconds, permanently fixing your chaotic bookmark situation across your entire Apple ecosystem.
