If you are downloading a massive 100GB video game, rendering a complex 4K video, or compiling code, the last thing you want is for Windows 11 to automatically go to sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity and completely ruin your progress. While you could open the Control Panel and manually change your power plan to “Never Sleep,” you have to remember to change it back later, or your PC will waste electricity running all night. Instead, you can use an official Microsoft tool to temporarily force your PC to stay awake.
Installing Microsoft PowerToys Awake
To do this safely, we will use a free, official utility suite created directly by Microsoft.
- Open the Microsoft Store app on your Windows 11 PC.
- Search for PowerToys and click the blue Install button.
- Once the installation is complete, launch the PowerToys app from your Start menu.
How to Use Awake
PowerToys contains dozens of utilities, but we only need to activate the “Awake” module.
- In the left-hand sidebar of the PowerToys app, click on Awake.
- Toggle the main Enable Awake switch to On.
- Under the “Behavior” section, change the mode from “Keep using the selected power plan” to Keep awake indefinitely or Keep awake temporarily.
If you choose “Keep awake temporarily,” you can set a specific timer (e.g., 2 hours). For that duration, your computer will completely ignore your Windows sleep settings, ensuring your downloads finish securely. Once the timer expires, Awake automatically turns off, and your computer will naturally go to sleep according to your normal power plan, saving you the hassle of digging through the Control Panel.
