Typing on a small glass screen is prone to disastrous mistakes. You might be writing a long email, accidentally double-tap to highlight an entire paragraph of text, and then accidentally brush the backspace key. In an instant, ten minutes of writing vanishes. Unlike Microsoft Word or Google Docs, the iPhone keyboard does not have a visible “Undo” button. However, Apple built two different hidden gestures into iOS specifically to save you from this exact nightmare.
Method 1: The Three-Finger Swipe (The Pro Method)
This is the most reliable and fastest way to undo a mistake on an iPhone or iPad, but Apple never explicitly teaches it to users.
If you accidentally delete a chunk of text, do not touch the keyboard again. Simply place three fingers on the screen simultaneously and swipe to the left.
The moment you perform this gesture, a small “Undo” badge will briefly flash at the top of the screen, and your deleted text will instantly reappear exactly where it was. It acts exactly like pressing Ctrl + Z on a Windows PC or Cmd + Z on a Mac.
If you undo something and realize you actually did want it deleted, you can perform a “Redo” by placing three fingers on the screen and swiping to the right.
Method 2: Shake to Undo (The Classic Method)
If the three-finger swipe feels too awkward (especially if you are holding your phone with one hand), you can use a much older hardware feature.
If you accidentally delete your text, literally shake your iPhone firmly in your hand. (A quick, sharp flick of the wrist is all it takes).
The accelerometer inside the phone will detect the violent motion, and a popup window will appear on the screen asking: “Undo Typing?” Tap the Undo button, and your text will be restored.
Note: If you find yourself accidentally triggering the shake feature while walking or driving, you can disable it by going to Settings > Accessibility > Touch, and turning off the “Shake to Undo” toggle switch.
