The Accidental Desktop Reveal
In macOS Sonoma, Apple introduced a new default behavior for the desktop. If you click on any empty space on your wallpaper, all of your open application windows instantly slide off the screen to the edges, revealing your bare desktop. Clicking the desktop again (or opening a file) brings the windows back.
This feature was designed to make it easier to access files saved directly on your desktop or to use desktop widgets. However, it can be incredibly disruptive for users who are accustomed to clicking the desktop simply to deselect an active window or to switch focus to Finder. Accidental clicks result in your entire workspace flying away. Fortunately, you can change this behavior so it only activates when you explicitly want it to (like when using Stage Manager).
How to Disable the Click to Reveal Desktop Feature
You can turn off this specific wallpaper interaction in the Desktop & Dock settings.
- Click the Apple Logo in the top-left corner of the menu bar and select System Settings…
- Scroll down the left-hand sidebar and click on Desktop & Dock.
- Scroll down the right-hand pane until you find the Desktop & Stage Manager section.
- Look for the option labelled Click wallpaper to reveal desktop.
- Next to this text, click the dropdown menu (which is likely set to “Always”).
- Change the selection from “Always” to Only in Stage Manager.
Now, when you are working normally with standard overlapping windows, clicking the desktop wallpaper will simply switch your active app to Finder, leaving your windows exactly where they are. The reveal animation will only occur if you have Stage Manager actively turned on.
