The Personal Hotspot feature on your iPhone is a lifesaver when you need to connect your laptop or iPad to the internet while away from a Wi-Fi network. By default, modern iPhones (iPhone 12 and newer) broadcast this hotspot using a 5GHz Wi-Fi band. This provides the fastest possible connection speeds, which is ideal if you are tethering a modern laptop.
However, the 5GHz band has shorter range and struggles to penetrate walls. More importantly, older devices—such as older laptops, legacy e-readers, and many smart home devices—physically lack the hardware to “see” or connect to a 5GHz network. If you are trying to connect an older device to your iPhone and the hotspot simply isn’t showing up in the list of available networks, the Wi-Fi band is likely the culprit.
This guide explains how to force your iPhone to broadcast its Personal Hotspot over the older, more universally compatible 2.4GHz band.
How to Enable “Maximize Compatibility”
Apple does not explicitly label this setting as “2.4GHz vs 5GHz.” Instead, they use a user-friendly toggle called “Maximize Compatibility.”
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap on Personal Hotspot. (If you do not see it on the main page, tap Cellular first, then Personal Hotspot).
- Scroll down slightly until you see the toggle labeled Maximize Compatibility.
- Toggle the switch to the On (green) position.
What Happens Next?
By enabling this switch, your iPhone will instantly switch its hotspot broadcast from 5GHz to 2.4GHz.
- The Benefit: Older devices that previously could not detect your hotspot will now see it appear in their Wi-Fi lists and be able to connect successfully. Furthermore, the hotspot’s signal will travel slightly further, allowing you to move your laptop further away from your phone.
- The Trade-off: The 2.4GHz band is significantly slower and more susceptible to interference from other wireless devices (like Bluetooth headsets or microwaves) than the 5GHz band.
If you are connecting a modern MacBook to your iPhone to download large files, you should leave “Maximize Compatibility” Off to ensure maximum speed. Only turn it on when you encounter a specific device that refuses to connect.
