The Creepy Advertisement Problem
Have you ever searched for a specific brand of running shoes on Safari, only to open the Apple News app an hour later and see a massive banner advertisement for those exact same shoes? This is not a coincidence. Apple operates its own advertising platform within the iOS ecosystem. By default, your iPhone tracks your App Store search history, Apple News reading habits, and downloaded applications to build a detailed “Personalized Ads” profile. Apple uses this profile to target you with highly specific advertisements across their first-party applications (like the App Store and Apple Stocks). If you find this level of corporate profiling creepy, you should disable the feature entirely.
How to Turn Off Apple’s Personalized Ads
You can revoke Apple’s permission to build this advertising profile deep within the privacy settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down the main list and tap on Privacy & Security.
- Scroll all the way down to the very bottom of the page.
- Tap on Apple Advertising.
- You will see a toggle switch labeled Personalized Ads.
- Tap the switch to turn it Off (the green background will disappear).
What Actually Happens?
Turning this switch off does not magically remove advertisements from your iPhone. You will still see banner ads in the App Store and sponsored articles in Apple News. However, the ads you see will be completely generic and untargeted. They will be based solely on broad demographic data (like your general region) rather than your specific, personal reading and search history, significantly increasing your digital privacy.
