What is Presence Sensing?
Modern premium Windows 11 laptops often include a highly advanced, battery-saving hardware feature called “Presence Sensing.” By utilizing the laptop’s built-in webcam or a dedicated infrared sensor, Windows actively monitors the physical space in front of the screen. If you get up from your desk to grab a cup of coffee, the computer detects that you have left and instantly turns off the screen and locks the system, regardless of your standard screen timeout settings. While this provides excellent physical security in a busy office, it can be infuriating if you are simply sitting slightly off-axis reading a book, or if the sensor fails to recognize you in low-light conditions, constantly shutting off your display while you are still working.
How to Disable the Automatic Screen Off Feature
You can turn off this aggressive hardware sensor directly from the main Windows Settings, forcing the computer to rely solely on your traditional, time-based screen timeout rules.
- Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
- In the left-hand sidebar, click on System.
- In the main window, click on Power & battery.
- Look for a section titled Presence sensing. Click it to expand the menu. (Note: If you do not see this section, your specific laptop hardware does not support the feature, and your screen is turning off due to standard power plan settings).
- You will see an option labeled “Turn off my screen when I leave”.
- Toggle the switch to the Off position.
Managing the “Wake on Approach” Feature
While you are in this menu, you can also manage the inverse feature.
- Look at the toggle directly below, labeled “Wake my device when I approach”.
- If you find it creepy that your laptop screen suddenly turns on the moment you walk into the room, toggle this to the Off position as well.
Your laptop will now respect your traditional power settings, staying awake exactly as long as you told it to, regardless of where you are sitting in the room.
