How to Disable the Significant Locations Tracking Feature on iPhone

The Hidden Privacy Risk

Deep within the iOS operating system, Apple includes a highly specific location-tracking feature called “Significant Locations.” Unlike standard GPS tracking that tells Google Maps where you are right now, Significant Locations silently builds a permanent, historical database of everywhere you go. It tracks the exact addresses you visit, logs exactly how many times you have been there, and calculates exactly how long you stay. Apple uses this deeply personal data to provide predictive traffic routing in Apple Maps and to automatically generate personalized Photo Memories. While Apple insists this data is end-to-end encrypted and never leaves your physical device, many users feel deeply uncomfortable knowing their iPhone maintains a secret, hyper-detailed log of their daily physical movements.

How to Clear Your Location History and Turn the Feature Off

This setting is buried under several layers of privacy menus, meaning you are unlikely to stumble across it by accident.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Privacy & Security.
  3. Tap on Location Services at the very top of the list.
  4. Scroll all the way down past your entire list of installed apps (this could take a while) and tap on System Services at the very bottom.
  5. Scroll down again and tap on Significant Locations.
  6. Your iPhone will prompt you to authenticate using Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode.

Erasing the Data

You are now inside the secret dashboard. You will likely see a list of cities you have recently visited.

  1. First, look at the very bottom of the screen and tap Clear History. Confirm the deletion when prompted. This permanently deletes the existing database of your past movements.
  2. Now, look at the very top of the screen at the main toggle switch.
  3. Tap the toggle next to Significant Locations to turn it Off (the green background will disappear).

Your iPhone will immediately cease logging your daily routines. You can still use GPS navigation apps perfectly normally; the phone simply will no longer build a historical database of your life.
