How to Disable “Vibrate on Silent” on iPhone

The Loud Vibration

The physical mute switch on the side of the iPhone is an iconic hardware feature. When you flip the switch to reveal the orange indicator, the phone enters “Silent Mode,” instantly silencing all ringtones and text message alerts. However, by default, the iPhone substitutes the audible ringtone with a prolonged, intense vibration from the Taptic Engine. If you are sitting in a perfectly quiet boardroom and your phone is resting on a hard wooden table, that intense vibration can often sound louder and more disruptive than an actual ringtone. You must decouple the vibration motor from the mute switch.

How to Turn Off Vibrate on Silent

You can force the iPhone to become completely dead and silent via the Sound settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Sounds & Haptics.
  3. Look for the section labeled “Vibrate” (or “Haptics” on newer iOS versions).
  4. Locate the toggle switch labeled Play Haptics in Silent Mode (or “Vibrate on Silent”).
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

Absolute Silence

The change takes effect instantly. The next time you flip the physical mute switch on the side of your phone, the device will enter a state of absolute silence. If someone calls or texts you, the screen will still illuminate, but the speaker will not make a sound and the vibration motor will remain completely dormant. You can safely place the phone on a desk knowing it will never buzz against the hard surface.
