The Accidental Eraser
Apple includes a legacy gesture on the iPhone called “Shake to Undo.” If you are typing a long email or a text message and you make a mistake, you can physically shake the entire phone back and forth. A pop-up will appear asking if you want to “Undo Typing,” allowing you to quickly delete the last few words. While clever in theory, it is a nightmare in practice. If you are typing while riding in a bumpy car, or if you simply adjust your grip on the phone too aggressively, the prompt constantly interrupts you and risks deleting paragraphs of hard work. You must disable the physical gesture.
How to Turn Off Shake to Undo
You can completely deactivate the accelerometer trigger via the Accessibility settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on Accessibility.
- Under the “Physical and Motor” section, tap on Touch.
- Look down the list for the toggle switch labeled Shake to Undo.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
Stable Typing
The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will immediately stop monitoring the internal gyroscope for sudden, jerky movements while the keyboard is active. You can now type comfortably while walking or riding a bus; the phone will never again throw an unexpected pop-up asking to delete your text, completely securing your work from accidental erasure.
