The Public Broadcast
Apple’s “Focus” feature (an evolution of Do Not Disturb) allows you to silence notifications while you are working or sleeping. However, by default, Apple enables a feature called “Focus Status.” When this is on, if a friend opens the Messages app to text you, they will see a small banner at the bottom of their screen stating, “John has notifications silenced.” While this is intended to let people know why you aren’t replying immediately, it is a massive broadcast of your personal availability. It tells everyone in your contacts list exactly when you are busy, when you are sleeping, or when you are intentionally ignoring your phone. If you want your availability to remain private, you must disable this broadcast.
How to Turn Off Focus Status Sharing
You can revoke the operating system’s permission to broadcast your notification status via the Focus settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on Focus.
- Look for the master toggle setting labeled Focus Status and tap on it.
- You will see a master toggle switch labeled Share Focus Status.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
Absolute Privacy
The change is instantaneous across your entire Apple account. You can now turn on “Do Not Disturb” or “Sleep Focus” whenever you want. Your iPhone will successfully silence all incoming calls and texts, but the people texting you will have absolutely no idea. Their Messages app will simply show the normal blue bubble, giving you the privacy to read and reply to messages entirely on your own schedule without broadcasting your daily routine.
