The Activity Assumption
The Apple Watch constantly monitors your accelerometer and heart rate. If you begin walking briskly to the bus stop or running to catch a train, the watch’s internal AI often assumes you have begun a formal exercise routine. It will suddenly vibrate your wrist and display a massive “Start Workout?” prompt, asking if it should begin tracking an Outdoor Walk or Outdoor Run. While useful for forgetful athletes, this is incredibly annoying for anyone simply navigating a busy city. If you prefer to manually start your workouts only when you are actually at the gym, you must completely disable the background activity detection engine.
How to Turn Off the Start Workout Reminder
You must sever the AI’s ability to interrupt your day using the companion Watch app on your iPhone.
- Open the Watch app on your iPhone.
- Ensure you are on the My Watch tab at the bottom left.
- Scroll down the main list and tap on Workout.
- Locate the master toggle switch labeled Start Workout Reminder.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
Manual Control
The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely terminate the background AI algorithm responsible for guessing your intentions. You can now sprint across an airport terminal or power-walk through a grocery store, and the watch will remain completely silent. It will still passively track your daily steps in the background, but it will never again interrupt you with a massive prompt demanding that you officially record a workout.
