How to Disable the Dictation Microphone on the iPhone Keyboard

The Accidental Activation

The iPhone keyboard features a prominent microphone icon located directly beneath the spacebar (or next to it, depending on the model). This button activates the iOS “Dictation” engine, which uses voice recognition to transcribe your speech into text. While dictation is incredibly useful for writing long emails hands-free, the physical placement of the microphone button is highly problematic. Fast typists will frequently miss the spacebar and accidentally tap the microphone, which instantly pauses their music, brings up a massive audio waveform on the screen, and interrupts their workflow. If you strictly prefer typing with your thumbs, you must remove this button.

How to Turn Off Dictation

You can permanently remove the microphone icon from the keyboard interface via the Keyboard settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on General.
  3. Scroll down and tap on Keyboard.
  4. Scroll down to the absolute bottom of the page, looking under the “Dictation” section.
  5. Locate the toggle switch labeled Enable Dictation.
  6. Toggle this switch to the Off position.
  7. A warning prompt will appear. Tap Turn Off Dictation to confirm.

A Dedicated Keyboard

The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely sever the voice transcription engine from the text input system. The next time you open a text message, the microphone icon will be completely gone from the keyboard layout. The spacebar will expand slightly to fill the gap, guaranteeing that you will never again accidentally trigger voice recognition while trying to type a sentence.
