How to Disable “Tap to Wake” on iPhone

The Hypersensitive Screen

Modern iPhones feature a hardware capability called “Tap to Wake.” By default, when your iPhone is locked and sitting on a desk with a completely black screen, a single, gentle tap anywhere on the glass will instantly ignite the display. While this is convenient for quickly checking the time, the screen is often too sensitive. If you carry the phone in a thin pocket or toss it into a bag, the fabric brushing against the glass will constantly trigger the screen to wake up, draining your battery and occasionally causing accidental emergency calls. You must disable the tap trigger.

How to Turn Off Tap to Wake

You can permanently sever the tap-to-wake gesture via the Accessibility settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on Accessibility.
  3. Under the “Physical and Motor” section, tap on Touch.
  4. Scroll down and locate the toggle switch labeled Tap to Wake.
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

A Physical Requirement

The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely deactivate the digitizer while the screen is asleep. You can tap, poke, or drag your finger across the black glass as much as you want; the display will remain entirely dormant. To check your notifications or view the time, you must now explicitly press the physical Side button (or use the “Raise to Wake” motion feature, if enabled).
