How to Disable “Raise to Speak” for Siri on Apple Watch

The Accidental Eavesdropper

The Apple Watch features a highly sensitive audio trigger called “Raise to Speak.” When enabled, the watch utilizes its internal accelerometer to detect when you lift your wrist quickly toward your face. The moment it detects this specific motion, it instantly activates the microphone and begins recording audio, assuming you are about to give Siri a command without having to say “Hey Siri.” Unfortunately, if you talk with your hands, adjust your glasses, or simply raise your arm while having a private conversation, the watch will accidentally activate the microphone, listen to your conversation, and often blurt out an embarrassing, out-of-context response. You must disable this motion trigger.

How to Turn Off Raise to Speak

You can permanently disconnect the accelerometer from the Siri microphone via the Siri settings.

  1. Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
  2. Scroll down the main list and tap on Siri.
  3. Under the “Ask Siri” section, locate the toggle switch labeled Raise to Speak.
  4. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

Intentional Commands Only

The change takes effect instantly. The Apple Watch will completely sever the connection between the physical motion of your arm and the internal microphone. You can now gesticulate wildly, raise your arm to check the time, or adjust your hat, and the microphone will remain completely dead. To activate Siri, you must now explicitly say the “Hey Siri” trigger phrase or physically press and hold the Digital Crown.
