The Strobe Light
Apple includes a powerful accessibility feature on the iPhone designed for users who are deaf or hard of hearing. Known as “LED Flash for Alerts,” this feature hijacks the incredibly bright camera flash on the back of the phone and violently strobes it every single time you receive a text message, phone call, or application notification. While critical for its intended audience, if this feature is accidentally enabled by a standard user, it is highly disruptive. If your phone is sitting face-down on a desk in a dark room, a single group chat message can turn your office into a discotheque. You must dig into the accessibility menu to turn off the strobe.
How to Turn Off LED Flash for Alerts
You can permanently disable the camera flash notification system via the Accessibility settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on Accessibility.
- Scroll down to the “Hearing” section and tap on Audio/Visual.
- Scroll to the absolute bottom of the page.
- Locate the master toggle switch labeled LED Flash for Alerts.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
Standard Notifications Only
The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will immediately sever the software connection between the notification center and the camera hardware. The next time you receive a phone call or an iMessage, the screen will illuminate and the phone will vibrate, but the LED flash on the back of the device will remain completely dark.
