How to Disable Siri Dictation on Apple Watch

The Public Annoyance

When you attempt to reply to a text message directly on your Apple Watch, the interface often defaults to a microphone icon, prompting you to dictate your response using Siri. While speech-to-text is highly accurate, it requires you to speak your private text messages out loud. If you are sitting in a quiet office, riding public transportation, or simply value your privacy, talking into your wrist is incredibly awkward. Furthermore, accidental taps on the microphone icon can easily record background conversations. If you prefer to strictly use the on-screen QWERTY keyboard or pre-written quick replies, you must disable the dictation engine.

How to Turn Off Siri Dictation

You can permanently sever the watch’s ability to process speech-to-text via the General settings.

  1. Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
  2. Scroll down the main list and tap on General.
  3. Scroll down and tap on Dictation.
  4. Locate the master toggle switch labeled Dictation.
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
  6. A confirmation warning will appear. Tap Turn Off Dictation.

Keyboard Only

The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely unload the local speech-to-text algorithm. The microphone icon will instantly vanish from the text message reply screen. From now on, when you tap “Reply” to a message, the watch will strictly present you with the silent on-screen keyboard, the scribble pad, or your list of pre-written text responses, guaranteeing total silence.
