The Keyboard Override
By default, the iPhone keyboard utilizes an aggressive formatting engine. Every time you finish a sentence with a period or start a brand-new text message, iOS automatically capitalizes the very first letter you type. While this enforces proper grammar in professional emails, it is incredibly frustrating for programmers, terminal users, or anyone who prefers a casual, entirely lowercase typing aesthetic. If you constantly find yourself fighting the keyboard to force a letter back to lowercase, you must completely disable the automatic formatting engine.
How to Turn Off Auto-Capitalization
You can permanently force the keyboard to strictly respect your shift-key inputs via the General settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on General.
- Scroll down and tap on Keyboard.
- Under the “All Keyboards” section, locate the master toggle switch labeled Auto-Capitalization.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
Absolute Keyboard Control
The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely terminate the background script responsible for analyzing sentence structure. Now, when you begin a new text message or hit the spacebar after a period, the keyboard will remain firmly locked in lowercase mode. To type a capital letter, you must now explicitly and intentionally press the shift arrow key yourself.
