The Accidental Camera
The iPhone includes a dedicated Accessibility app called “Magnifier,” designed to use the camera as a digital magnifying glass for reading small text like restaurant menus. By default, iOS binds this app to a global hardware shortcut: rapidly triple-clicking the physical side power button. However, users frequently trigger this shortcut by accident when fumbling to quickly turn the screen off, or when trying to rapidly double-click to activate Apple Pay. If you do not require visual assistance and are tired of the camera randomly launching, you must unbind this hardware shortcut.
How to Turn Off the Magnifier Shortcut
You can permanently sever the connection between the power button and the Magnifier app via the Accessibility settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap on Accessibility.
- Scroll all the way down to the very bottom of the screen to the “General” section.
- Tap on Accessibility Shortcut.
- Look for Magnifier in the list. If it has a blue checkmark next to it, tap it once to remove the checkmark.
Restoring the Power Button
The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely unbind the triple-click command. You can now press the side power button three, four, or five times in rapid succession, and the operating system will absolutely refuse to launch the Magnifier application. The Magnifier app itself is not deleted (you can still find it in your App Library if you ever need it), but its intrusive global hardware trigger is permanently disabled, ensuring a frustration-free experience when locking your device.
