By default, rapidly pressing the side power button on your iPhone twice will instantly bring up your Apple Wallet, allowing you to quickly pay at a register using Apple Pay. While this shortcut is incredibly convenient, it can also be highly annoying if you constantly trigger it by accident when trying to lock your phone or turn off the screen. Fortunately, you can disable this shortcut entirely.
How to Turn Off the Apple Pay Shortcut
Disabling the double-click shortcut does not remove your credit cards from your phone, nor does it disable Apple Pay itself. It simply stops the Wallet app from launching when the power button is pressed.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down through the list of options and tap on Wallet & Apple Pay.
- Look for the section labeled “Cards.” Directly underneath your listed credit/debit cards, you will see a toggle switch labeled Double-Click Side Button.
- Tap the toggle switch to turn it Off (the green background will turn gray).
How Do I Use Apple Pay Now?
With the shortcut disabled, your side button will return to its standard behavior (pressing it once will lock/wake the screen, and holding it will activate Siri).
When you are at a cash register and need to use Apple Pay, you will now have to manually open the Wallet app from your home screen or by searching for it in the App Library. Once the Wallet app is open on your screen, simply hold your phone near the NFC payment terminal. Your iPhone will automatically prompt you to authenticate with Face ID or Touch ID, and the payment will process exactly as it normally would.
