How to Disable “Handoff” on Apple Watch

The Cross-Device Link

Apple devices are designed to seamlessly communicate with each other using a feature called “Handoff.” By default, if you are reading an email, looking at a map, or writing a text message on your Apple Watch, your paired iPhone will silently generate a small shortcut icon on its lock screen or app switcher. This allows you to pick up your phone and instantly “hand off” the task to the larger screen. While highly convenient, this constant background synchronization drains battery life on both devices and can clutter your iPhone interface if you never actually use the feature. You must manually sever the cross-device connection.

How to Turn Off Handoff

You can permanently disable the task synchronization engine via the General settings.

  1. Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
  2. Scroll down the main list and tap on General.
  3. Scroll down and tap on Handoff.
  4. Locate the master toggle switch labeled Enable Handoff.
  5. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

Isolated Devices

The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely terminate the background bluetooth broadcast responsible for communicating its active application state to the iPhone. You can now read emails or look at maps on your wrist for as long as you want, and your iPhone will remain completely unaware, guaranteeing that the two devices operate entirely independently of each other.
