How to Disable the Handwashing Timer on Apple Watch

The Unwanted Coach

The Apple Watch features an automated health tracking system called the “Handwashing Timer.” Utilizing the internal microphone to listen for the sound of running water, combined with the accelerometer analyzing the specific motion of your wrists rubbing together, the watch attempts to automatically detect when you are washing your hands. When triggered, it blasts a 20-second countdown timer onto your screen and aggressively buzzes your wrist to ensure you wash long enough. While well-intentioned during a pandemic, this algorithm is highly prone to false positives. If you are washing dishes, scrubbing vegetables, or simply rinsing a cup, the watch will constantly interrupt your workflow with an unprompted countdown timer. You must disable the detection engine.

How to Turn Off the Handwashing Timer

You can permanently sever the connection between the microphone and the handwashing algorithm via the Handwashing settings.

  1. Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
  2. Scroll down the main list and tap on Handwashing.
  3. Locate the master toggle switch labeled Handwashing Timer.
  4. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
  5. Optional: Directly beneath it, disable the Handwashing Reminders if you do not want the watch nagging you to wash your hands when you return home.

A Silent Sink

The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely terminate the background audio monitoring associated with running water. You can now aggressively wash dishes or rinse your hands for two seconds without the watch ever again hijacking your screen or buzzing your wrist with an unwanted countdown clock.
