The Emergency Trigger
The Apple Watch contains a highly sensitive gyroscope and accelerometer designed to detect sudden impacts. If the “Fall Detection” feature is active (which is enabled by default for older users), the watch constantly analyzes your wrist movements for the specific physics of a hard fall. If it registers an impact followed by a complete lack of movement, it will violently tap your wrist, sound a massive alarm, and automatically dial emergency services (911) on your behalf. While this is a lifesaving feature for elderly users, it is incredibly problematic for mountain bikers, martial artists, or manual laborers. Violent impacts from these activities will frequently trigger the SOS sequence by accident, leading to false emergency calls. You must disable the sensor.
How to Turn Off Fall Detection
You can permanently shut down the impact monitoring algorithm via the SOS settings.
- Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
- Scroll down the main list and tap on SOS.
- Scroll down and tap on Fall Detection.
- Locate the master toggle switch labeled Fall Detection.
- Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).
- A confirmation warning may appear asking if you are sure; tap Turn Off.
Manual SOS Only
The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely sever the connection between its internal accelerometer and the emergency dialing engine. You can now crash a mountain bike, aggressively hit a heavy bag, or drop heavy tools without the watch ever attempting to call an ambulance. If you actually experience an emergency, you must now manually hold down the Side button and drag the SOS slider across the screen.
