How to Disable the “End Workout Reminder” on Apple Watch

The Premature Stop

The Apple Watch features an algorithmic “End Workout Reminder.” If you manually start a run or a cycling session in the Workout app, the watch constantly monitors your heart rate and accelerometer data. If it detects a sudden drop in your heart rate or notices that you have stopped moving for a few minutes (for example, stopping at a long traffic light or taking a brief rest), the watch assumes you are finished. It will forcefully vibrate and throw a full-screen prompt asking, “Finished your workout?” If you accidentally tap “Yes,” or if the prompt simply annoys you during intervals, you must disable the algorithm.

How to Turn Off the End Workout Reminder

You can permanently disable the algorithmic stop prompt via the Workout settings.

  1. Open the Settings app directly on your Apple Watch (the grey gear icon).
  2. Scroll all the way down the main list and tap on Workout.
  3. Look for the toggle switch labeled End Workout Reminder.
  4. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

Manual Control

The change is instantaneous. The Apple Watch will completely sever the connection between your resting heart rate and the Workout app interface. You can start a workout and sit perfectly still on a park bench for an hour; the watch will continue recording the session, burning active calories, and tracking your metrics completely uninterrupted. It will only stop recording when you explicitly swipe right and tap the red “End” button.
