How to Disable Auto-Correction on iPhone

The Rogue Dictionary

Apple’s iPhone keyboard includes a highly aggressive predictive text engine called “Auto-Correction.” As you type an email or an SMS message, the operating system compares your keystrokes against an internal dictionary. If it believes you misspelled a word, it will automatically and silently replace the word with its own suggestion the moment you press the spacebar. While helpful for correcting “teh” to “the,” it is notoriously terrible at handling slang, technical jargon, or multiple languages. If the iPhone constantly forces your perfectly valid words into completely different, embarrassing phrases, you must disable the auto-replace engine.

How to Turn Off Auto-Correction

You can revoke the keyboard’s permission to alter your text via the General settings.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap on General.
  3. Scroll down and tap on Keyboard.
  4. Look for the section labeled “All Keyboards.”
  5. Find the master toggle switch labeled Auto-Correction.
  6. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the green background will disappear).

Total Typing Control

The change takes effect immediately. The next time you open the Messages app, the keyboard will still display the red squiggly line underneath words it doesn’t recognize, and it will still show predictive suggestions in the grey bar above the keys. However, the iPhone will completely stop forcing the changes onto the screen. It will only type exactly the letters your fingers press, giving you absolute control over your vocabulary.
