The Constant Interruption
By default, if your iPhone loses its connection to a known Wi-Fi network (for example, when you walk out of your house), it will aggressively begin scanning the environment for open, public networks. If it detects a network at a coffee shop or a hotel, it will immediately throw a pop-up alert onto your screen asking if you want to “Join” the network. If you live in a dense city and are simply trying to walk down the street while reading an article, these constant pop-ups completely hijack your screen and ruin your workflow. You must permanently silence this proactive network scanning feature.
How to Turn Off Ask to Join Networks
You can permanently sever the operating system’s ability to prompt you for new connections via the Wi-Fi settings.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap on Wi-Fi near the top of the menu.
- Look below the list of available networks and tap on Ask to Join Networks.
- Change the setting from “Ask” or “Notify” to Off.
Silent Network Management
The change takes effect instantly. The iPhone will completely terminate the background daemon responsible for triggering network pop-ups. Your phone will still automatically connect to known, saved networks (like your home or office router). However, when you are walking in public, the phone will silently fall back to your cellular data plan. It will absolutely never again interrupt your screen to suggest an unsecured public Wi-Fi hotspot, allowing you to browse in peace.
