The Grammar Suggestion Annoyance
Google Docs uses an advanced, AI-driven grammar checker. As you type, it constantly analyzes your sentence structure, punctuation, and phrasing. When it believes you have made a grammatical error, it underlines the text with a jagged blue line. Hovering over the line provides a suggestion for how to rephrase the sentence to make it “more correct.”
While this is useful for formal business emails, it is incredibly annoying if you are writing creative fiction, transcribing natural dialogue, or using stylized slang. The AI often fails to understand creative context, flooding your screen with distracting blue squiggles that insist your artistic choices are grammatically incorrect. You can turn off this background analysis entirely.
How to Stop Automatic Grammar Corrections
You can disable the grammar suggestions from the main Tools menu.
- Open your web browser and navigate to any open document in Google Docs.
- At the top of the screen, click on the Tools menu.
- Hover your mouse over Spelling and grammar in the dropdown menu to reveal a secondary menu.
- In the secondary menu, look for the option labelled Show grammar suggestions. It will likely have a small checkmark next to it.
- Click on “Show grammar suggestions” to remove the checkmark.
The jagged blue lines will immediately disappear from your document. Google Docs will continue to flag obvious spelling mistakes with red lines (unless you have disabled that separately), but it will completely stop analyzing your sentence structure and grammar, allowing you to write creatively without the AI criticizing your style.
