Aakash 2, codenamed UbiSlate 7Ci, is an Android-based tablet computer produced by a British company, DataWind, along with the India-based company Quad. Aakash 2, an updated version of the Aakash tablet, was released on 11 November 2012.
Aakash 2 is an extremely low-cost tablet with a 7-inch touch screen, an ARM 11 processor, and 512MB of RAM. It runs on the Android 4.0.3 (Ice Cream Sandwich) platform. The tablet has two USB ports and is capable of playing HD videos.
Educational Impact and Availability
The Aakash series of tablets are developed as part of India’s e-learning program for colleges and universities. The Indian Ministry of Human Resource Development buys and distributes the tablet to students from 25,000 colleges and 400 universities. (Price in India: Rs. 2263 & Rs. 1130 for students).
A commercial version of the Aakash 2 tablet is marketed as UbiSlate 7Ci at a price of $60. For downloading apps, the tablet has access to more than 150,000 apps from the Android market and GetJar (an independent market).
The UbiSurfer browser, specially designed for UbiSlate tablets, provides a fast web surfing experience. The tablet has means for plugging in a 3G dongle and can make and receive phone calls.
