How to Disable Spell Check Globally in Google Chrome

The Red Underline Annoyance

Google Chrome features a built-in spelling and grammar engine. By default, as you type into any text box across the internet—whether you are writing an email, posting on a forum, or filling out a form—Chrome actively scans your text. If it encounters a word that is not in its local dictionary, it violently slaps a jagged red line underneath it. If you frequently type in multiple languages simultaneously, use heavy technical jargon, or simply find the constant red lines visually distracting while you are trying to think, you must disable the real-time scanning engine.

How to Turn Off Spell Check Globally

You can permanently shut down the browser’s background text analysis via the Language settings.

  1. Open the Google Chrome desktop browser.
  2. Click the three vertical dots (⋮) in the top right corner and select Settings.
  3. In the left-hand sidebar, click on Languages.
  4. Scroll down the main window to the “Spell check” section.
  5. Locate the master toggle switch labeled “Check for spelling errors when you type text on web pages.”
  6. Toggle this switch to the Off position (the grey position).

A Clean Text Editor

The change is instantaneous. Google Chrome will completely terminate the background text analysis daemon. It will immediately remove all existing red underlines from any text boxes currently open on your screen. You can now type as freely and as technically as you want, in any language combination, and the browser will never again interrupt your workflow with aggressive red squiggles.
