How to Disable the Snap Assist Flyout in Windows 11

The Distracting Flyout

Windows 11 features a powerful multitasking tool called Snap Assist. When you drag a web browser to the left edge of your screen, the window snaps to fill exactly half the monitor. Immediately after it snaps, Windows forcefully throws up a massive “flyout” menu on the empty right half of the screen, displaying thumbnail images of every single other application you have open, aggressively asking you to choose one to fill the remaining space. If you simply wanted to push a window to the side and leave the rest of your desktop visible, this constant flyout menu is a massive, visually distracting annoyance. You must disable the secondary suggestion engine.

How to Turn Off the Snap Assist Flyout

You can completely suppress the application thumbnail menu via the multitasking settings.

  1. Click the Start Menu and type Settings, or press the Windows Key + I.
  2. In the left-hand sidebar, click on System.
  3. In the main window, click on Multitasking.
  4. Ensure the master “Snap windows” toggle at the top is turned On.
  5. Click the small arrow icon (>) on the far right side of the “Snap windows” box to expand the advanced menu.
  6. Look for the specific checkbox labeled “When I snap a window, suggest what I can snap next to it.”
  7. Click the checkbox to completely remove the checkmark.

A Cleaner Desktop

The change takes effect instantly. The next time you drag a window to the edge of your screen, it will snap into place perfectly, but the operating system will remain totally silent. The massive, distracting gallery of thumbnail previews will never appear, leaving the rest of your desktop clean and completely untouched until you manually decide to move another window.
