There is nothing quite as jarring as having an advertisement or an autoplaying video suddenly blast audio through your speakers when you are trying to work. If you have dozens of tabs open, frantically searching for the tiny speaker icon to find the offending page can be incredibly frustrating.
Fortunately, Google Chrome allows you to silence individual tabs instantly without affecting the volume of your other web pages or system audio. In this guide, we will show you the fastest way to mute a specific tab in Chrome.
How to Identify the Noisy Tab
Before you can mute the audio, you need to find where it is coming from. Google Chrome makes this relatively simple by displaying a small Speaker Icon on the right side of any tab that is currently playing audio.
If you have many tabs open and the titles are condensed, the speaker icon will often replace the website’s favicon (the small logo on the left) or sit prominently in the centre of the tab, making it easy to spot at a glance.
Method 1: The Right-Click Method (Most Reliable)
The standard and most reliable way to silence a tab is using the right-click context menu.
- Locate the tab playing the unwanted audio (look for the speaker icon).
- Right-click anywhere on that specific tab at the top of your browser window.
- From the dropdown menu that appears, select Mute site.
The speaker icon on the tab will immediately change to a crossed-out speaker, indicating that the audio has been silenced.
Important Note: Chrome mutes the entire “site”, not just that one specific tab. If you have three YouTube tabs open and you right-click and mute one of them, all three YouTube tabs will be muted.
How to Unmute a Tab
If you want to restore audio to a site you previously silenced, the process is exactly the same in reverse.
- Right-click the tab that has the crossed-out speaker icon.
- Select Unmute site from the dropdown menu.
Pro Tip: Using the Chrome Media Control Hub
If you don’t want to hunt through 50 open tabs to find the one playing audio, Chrome offers a central “Media Control” hub.
- Look at the top-right corner of your Chrome browser, next to your extensions and profile picture.
- If audio or video is playing anywhere in the browser, you will see a Music Note icon with three lines next to it.
- Click this icon to open the Media Control dropdown.
- This panel will show you exactly what media is playing and from which site. You can use the controls here to pause the audio, skip tracks, or use the “picture-in-picture” mode without ever having to find the original tab.
