Typing out a long, complicated Wi-Fi password for a guest can be frustrating, especially if it includes a mix of random characters and symbols. Fortunately, Apple’s iOS includes a seamless, built-in feature that allows you to instantly share your Wi-Fi password with another iPhone or iPad user using Bluetooth and Apple ID verification.
In this guide, we will explain exactly how to trigger the Wi-Fi password sharing prompt and troubleshoot common issues if the popup refuses to appear.
Prerequisites for Sharing Wi-Fi Passwords
Apple enforces strict security rules before allowing the password prompt to appear. If even one of these conditions is not met, the feature will not work:
- Contacts: You must have the other person’s Apple ID email address saved in your Contacts app, and they must have your Apple ID email address saved in their Contacts app.
- Network Connection: The person sharing the password (the host) must already be connected to the Wi-Fi network they want to share, and their iPhone must be unlocked.
- Settings: Both iPhones must have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned On. Personal Hotspot must be turned Off on both devices.
- Proximity: The two iPhones must be physically close to each other (within normal Bluetooth range).
How to Share the Password
Once you have ensured all the prerequisites above are met, sharing the network is incredibly simple:
- The Guest (the person who needs the password) must open their Settings app and tap on Wi-Fi.
- The Guest taps on the name of the Wi-Fi network they wish to join. A standard password entry screen will appear. They should leave this screen open and wait.
- The Host (the person sharing the network) unlocks their iPhone and holds it close to the Guest’s iPhone.
- Within a few seconds, a card will slide up from the bottom of the Host’s screen asking: “Do you want to share the Wi-Fi password for [Network Name] with [Contact Name]?”
- The Host taps the blue Share Password button.
The password will be securely transmitted via Bluetooth, automatically populating the password field on the Guest’s iPhone. The Guest’s device will immediately connect to the network, and the Host will see a “Done” confirmation on their screen.
Troubleshooting: What if the Prompt Doesn’t Appear?
The most common problem with this feature is the popup card refusing to appear on the Host’s device. If you are experiencing this, follow these troubleshooting steps:
- Verify Contacts: Double-check that the email addresses saved in each other’s contacts are the exact email addresses used for your respective Apple IDs (iCloud accounts). A standard phone number is sometimes not enough.
- Restart Connections: On both iPhones, open the Control Centre, turn Wi-Fi and Bluetooth off, wait ten seconds, and turn them back on.
- Restart the Devices: A simple reboot clears temporary software glitches that often prevent the proximity sensor from triggering the prompt.
- Forget the Network (Guest): If the Guest’s iPhone has previously tried and failed to connect to the network using the wrong password, tap the blue “i” icon next to the network name and select Forget This Network. Then, try the process again from the beginning.
By ensuring your contacts are properly synced and your Bluetooth is active, you can eliminate the need to ever type a complicated Wi-Fi router password manually again.
