Late-night gaming sessions often result in severe eye strain and sleep disruption caused by harsh blue light emissions and glaring power lights. Microsoft addressed this across current-generation consoles by providing a dedicated Night Mode Xbox Series X and Series S suite. This feature allows players to dim display output, filter out blue frequencies, and lower or deactivate the glowing power LEDs on both the console and the wireless controller.
What Is Xbox Night Mode?
Unlike basic display presets found on television panels, Xbox Night Mode is a hardware-level accessibility and display feature built into the Xbox OS. It allows gamers to:
- Apply an adjustable blue light filter across all gameplay and system dashboards.
- Dim the master display brightness without altering underlying game video HDR configurations.
- Dim or completely switch off the illuminated Xbox nexus button on the console chassis.
- Dim or shut off the illuminated Xbox button on paired Xbox Wireless Controllers.
- Automate the feature based on local sunrise and sunset timings or custom schedules.
How to Enable Night Mode on Xbox Series X and S
Activating Night Mode is simple and takes just a moment via the system settings menu:
- Press the Xbox button on your controller to summon the guide overlay.
- Navigate to the far-right tab labelled Profile & system.
- Select Settings.
- Under the General or Accessibility category, select Night mode.
- Highlight the Night mode dropdown menu and choose On to enable it immediately, or choose Scheduled to automate activation.
Configuring Scheduled Activation
If you prefer having Night Mode engage automatically in the evening, select Scheduled under the Night mode menu:
- Switch at sunrise and sunset: Xbox detects your geographical location and adjusts activation times dynamically as seasons shift.
- Custom schedule: Specify precise start and stop hours (such as turning on at 21:00 and turning off at 07:00).
Adjusting Blue Light and Display Dimming
Fine-tuning the visual tone ensures comfortable viewing during low-light gameplay:
- Within the Night mode settings screen, locate the Display section.
- Move the Dim display slider to reduce overall screen luminosity (from 0% to 100%).
- Move the Blue light filter slider to shift the display colour balance towards warmer amber tones, reducing blue wavelength exposure.
- Check the Allow HDR toggle. Leaving HDR enabled preserves high dynamic range contrast while respecting your blue light and dimming limits.
Dimming Console and Controller LED Lights
One of the most valuable aspects of Xbox Night Mode is eliminating the harsh white glare emitted by the power buttons in dark rooms:
- In the Night mode menu, highlight Preferences.
- Select Controller LED brightness and choose whether to dim the controller button light or turn it completely off when Night Mode is active.
- Select Power button LED brightness to dim or extinguish the console front power light entirely.
These settings automatically revert to standard brightness during daytime hours when scheduled mode is configured.
Disabling Night Mode
If you need full colour accuracy for photo mode editing, video streaming, or HDR calibration, return to Settings > Accessibility > Night mode, select the main dropdown menu, and set it to Off.
