The Visual Clutter Vector
Modern news websites and long-form editorial pages are frequently overwhelmed by visual noise. Autoplaying video advertisements, social media sharing sidebars, sticky headers, and newsletter pop-ups aggressively compete for your attention, making it incredibly difficult to simply read the actual text. If you are conducting research or attempting to absorb a complex article, this environment is highly counterproductive. You must strip the webpage down to its fundamental typographic components.
How to Enable Reading Mode
Google Chrome includes a built-in, side-panel Reading Mode that dynamically extracts the core text of an article and presents it in a clean, highly customizable, distraction-free environment.
1. Open Google Chrome.
2. Navigate to the article or webpage you wish to read.
3. Look at the top-right corner of the Chrome interface, directly to the right of your profile picture. Click the Side panel icon (it looks like a square with a darkened right third).
4. The side panel will slide open on the right edge of your screen. At the top of this panel, click the dropdown menu (which usually defaults to “Bookmarks” or “Search”).
5. Select Reading Mode from the list.
Chrome will instantly parse the main webpage, extract the primary article text, and display it cleanly within the side panel. You can now use the toolbar at the top of the Reading Mode panel to drastically alter the typography to suit your needs: change the font to something more legible, increase the text size, widen the line spacing, and switch the background colour to a soothing sepia or dark grey to reduce eye strain.
