How to Connect an Xbox Controller to a Chromebook

Chromebooks were originally designed as simple, web-based laptops for writing documents and browsing the internet. However, with the integration of the Google Play Store and the rise of cloud gaming services like Xbox Cloud Gaming (xCloud) and NVIDIA GeForce Now, modern Chromebooks have evolved into highly capable gaming machines.

To play modern games effectively, you cannot rely on the keyboard and trackpad. You need a dedicated controller. Fortunately, Chrome OS natively supports the Xbox Wireless Controller via Bluetooth, allowing you to pair it in seconds without downloading any third-party drivers.

Which Xbox Controllers Are Compatible?

Before you begin, you must ensure your Xbox controller supports Bluetooth. Not all of them do.

  • Compatible: Xbox One S/X controllers, Xbox Series X/S controllers, and the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 all have built-in Bluetooth and will work perfectly.
  • Not Compatible: The original, launch-edition Xbox One controllers (released in 2013) do not have Bluetooth; they rely on a proprietary wireless signal. To identify them, look at the plastic surrounding the Xbox button. If it is a separate, glossy piece of plastic attached to the bumper buttons, it does not have Bluetooth. If it is the same matte plastic as the face of the controller, it has Bluetooth.

How to Pair the Xbox Controller via Bluetooth

The pairing process is identical to connecting a pair of wireless headphones.

  1. Turn on Bluetooth on the Chromebook: Look at the bottom-right corner of your Chromebook screen and click the time/battery icon to open the Quick Settings panel. Ensure the Bluetooth icon is blue (turned on). Click the small arrow next to the Bluetooth icon and select Pair new device.
  2. Turn on the Controller: Press and hold the Xbox logo button in the center of the controller until it lights up.
  3. Enter Pairing Mode: Look at the top edge of the controller (between the LB and RB bumper buttons). You will see a small, circular sync button. Press and hold this sync button for about 3 seconds until the Xbox logo on the front begins to flash rapidly.
  4. Connect to Chromebook: Look back at your Chromebook screen. Under the “Available devices” list, you should see “Xbox Wireless Controller” appear. Click it.

The flashing Xbox logo will turn solid, indicating a successful connection. Your Chromebook will also display a notification confirming the device is paired.

The Wired Alternative (USB-C)

If your Chromebook is older and struggles with Bluetooth lag, or if your controller batteries are dead, you can completely bypass the wireless pairing process and use a physical cable.

Simply take a standard USB-C cable (the same kind used to charge modern Android phones or the Chromebook itself). Plug one end into the top of the Xbox controller and the other end into a USB port on the Chromebook.

Chrome OS will instantly recognize the controller through the wired connection. This method guarantees zero input latency, which is crucial for competitive cloud gaming, and it will power the controller without needing AA batteries.

Troubleshooting: Why is the Controller Lagging?

If you connect via Bluetooth and notice a half-second delay between pressing a button and the character jumping on screen, the issue is rarely the controller itself.

If you are playing a game through the Google Play Store (like Minecraft or Genshin Impact), Bluetooth lag is usually minimal. However, if you are using Xbox Cloud Gaming through the Chrome web browser, any lag you feel is likely network latency. Cloud gaming requires a flawlessly stable 5GHz Wi-Fi connection. If you are on a weak 2.4GHz network, the video stream will stutter, making the controller feel unresponsive.
