How to Stop Windows 11 from Automatically Locking the Taskbar

The Rigid Interface

In standard Windows 11 configurations, the taskbar is designed to be a static element anchored to the bottom of the screen. To prevent accidental drags or resizes by novice users, Windows automatically locks the taskbar in place. While this ensures a consistent desktop environment, it is incredibly restrictive for power users, developers, or anyone working on an ultrawide monitor who might prefer a vertical taskbar on the side of the screen, or who needs to temporarily drag the taskbar edge upwards to create a double-height row for organizing dozens of open application windows.

Reclaiming Taskbar Mobility

To customize your workspace layout and stop Windows 11 from automatically locking the taskbar in its default position, you must explicitly disable the lock feature in the personalization settings.

Note: Early builds of Windows 11 completely removed the ability to move the taskbar from the bottom edge. If you are on an older build, you must update first. Assuming you have a recent update, right-click anywhere on an empty space on the taskbar and select Taskbar settings. This will open the Personalization menu. Scroll down and click on Taskbar behaviors to expand the section. Look for a checkbox or toggle labelled Lock the taskbar. If this box is checked, click it to uncheck it. Once unlocked, you can click and drag the taskbar to different edges of the screen, or hover your mouse over the top edge of the taskbar until the cursor turns into a double-headed arrow, allowing you to click and drag to resize the taskbar’s height.
